The Boater Hat
Share
The boater hat, also known as a straw boater or skimmer, first appeared in the late 19th century. It became popular as a summer hat for men and women during the Edwardian era in the early 1900s. The boater hat was commonly worn for outdoor activities and was associated with a more casual and relaxed style.
The hat has a stiff flat crown and brim, typically with a solid or striped grosgrain ribbon band around the crown. Boaters were derived from the straw hat worn traditionally by the gondoliers of Venice.
